Development updates

What’s new, newest first.

Short, dated notes on what we’ve built in each Greenbow Labs product. Only things that are really done go here.

RanchPilot

Ranch and livestock management. Live on the web and on Google Play. About RanchPilot → · ranchpilot.app →

  1. RanchPilot is live

RanchPilot is open to everyone. Use it in any browser at ranchpilot.app, or get the Android app on Google Play in 34 countries. Try everything free for 30 days, no card to start. The iPhone app is coming.

  2. Colors and distinguishing marks

The Herd table can show a Color column (pick it under Columns). Every animal has a Distinguishing marks box (a white blaze, a star, a split ear), set in Edit or when recording a calving, and searching the herd finds it.

A scan of several receipt pages now uploads one page at a time and picks up where it stopped on a weak signal.

  3. English, Spanish and Portuguese, and a ranch logo

RanchPilot now speaks English, Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese: every screen, the sign-in pages (which follow your phone’s language, with a Language picker) and the full user manual in Help.

A ranch can upload its own logo, as a square badge in the top bar or a wide banner across the top of every screen.

  4. Task alarms, and quick notes for everyone

Give a task a time and up to two alarms, sent by email to the person the task is for. Alarms on the phone are coming. Tasks can now be changed after you make them.

Quick notes are on for everyone: say or type what happened, and RanchPilot turns it into records you check and save.

  5. Ranch tours

Tap Start a tour when you head out to check fences and water. Your phone traces your route on the ranch map while RanchPilot is open on the screen, with or without signal. Mark a problem where you find it, like a wire down or a dry tank, and it is pinned on the map.

Finish with your ranch’s own checklist (fences, water, gates, cattle, mineral, feed, anything unusual; owners and managers change the list in Settings) and spoken or typed notes. Any problem becomes a task with one tap. Forgot to start one? Log a past tour. Tracing with the screen off is still coming.

  6. Maps outside the US

The ranch map and the fence planner now show Satellite and Topo from each country’s own free government maps. Mexico gets aerial photos and a topographic map (INEGI). Canada and Australia get a topographic map (NRCan and Geoscience Australia). The US is as before, and Street works everywhere.

Pictures you’ve looked at work with no signal. Saving a whole ranch ahead of time works everywhere except Mexico for now. Satellite photos for Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the rest of Latin America are still coming.

  7. Calving records that fit how you work

A newborn’s sex can be recorded as "not sure yet" and set later. Calves are never offered as steers at birth; mark them castrated later. Color is picked from a list (black, red, white, brindle, baldy, roan and more), and each calf has an "unusual markings" box for what the color list can’t say.

The Herd table also has a DOB column, and shows UKN when a birth date isn’t known.

  8. A Herd table you can sort, and tags that follow the animal

On a tablet or computer the Herd table sorts by any column, tag number first, and you choose which columns show. It now shows each animal’s dam and sire, by their current tag, and its serial number. The herd list has a Calves filter.

An animal can carry up to three ear tags, and RanchPilot records where each one went: left ear, right ear, neck, leg band or wing. Every animal also gets a permanent serial number automatically, with one list per species (C-000001 for cattle, for example). It stays with the animal for life, whatever tags it wears. Owners can renumber older serials to this standard in Settings.

  9. RanchPilot reads your receipts

After scanning a receipt or invoice (Money > Scan a receipt), tap Read it for me: RanchPilot reads the vendor, date, total, tax and lines and suggests a category, then the expense form opens filled in for you to check and save. It flags a receipt whose numbers don’t add up. 100 reads per ranch per month. The pages are read by Greenbow’s assistant, which keeps no copy.

Owners and managers on every RanchPilot ranch can use it. Reading calf-notebook pages is still coming.

  10. Live weather radar and map layers on the ranch map

Tap Radar on Today and the last two hours of National Weather Service radar loop over your own pastures, so you can see rain coming before you head out (US only, needs signal). Tap Layers on the ranch map or the fence planner to put Satellite, Topo or Street under your pastures.

  11. Snap the calf notebook

On Breeding and births, tap Snap the calf notebook and photograph the pages of your handwritten calving notes. It works with no signal. The pages are kept with the ranch and wait under Notebook pages to enter until you tick I’ve entered these or set them aside. Hands can use it too.

For now you enter the births yourself, with the pictures right there to read from. RanchPilot reading the handwriting for you is coming next.

  12. Snap receipts and invoices

On Money, tap Scan a receipt and photograph each page. It works with no signal and uploads when you’re back in range. Each scan waits under Scanned, to review with its pages. Tap Record the expense and the expense is saved with the paper attached, or set the scan aside. Owners and managers only; hands never see it.

For now you type the amount. Reading the receipt for you followed on October 9.

  13. The ranch map

A new Ranch map screen shows every pasture on aerial pictures, colored by what it’s doing (grazing now, rested and ready, resting, or not grazed yet), with its name and head count. Tap a pasture to see its numbers and move cattle in or out.

Draw a pasture by tapping its corners on the picture, and RanchPilot works out the acres. Redraw it any time and the old outline stays in its history. Mark water, gates, rain gauges, mineral, feeders, hay, pens and shelter. Save the aerial pictures for the whole ranch so the map works with no signal. Aerial pictures cover the US.

  14. Last seen, and tag reader checks

On an animal’s page, tap Seen to record where you saw it. RanchPilot names the pasture you’re in from your phone’s location, or you pick one, and the page shows when the animal was last seen. If the last sighting is in a different pasture from the record, it says so and offers to record the move. It works with no signal.

Tag readers with a keyboard mode can type scans straight in, and RanchPilot checks each electronic tag number. A direct Bluetooth link to readers and scales is still to come.

  15. Forgot your password? Reset it yourself

On the sign-in page, tap Forgot your password? and we email you a link that works once, for 30 minutes. Changing your password signs you out everywhere. If the email doesn’t arrive, email hello@greenbowlabs.com and we’ll help.

  16. Photos on every animal

On an animal’s page, tap Take photo or From phone. Up to 24 photos per animal, and they work with no signal: they wait on the phone and upload when you’re back in range.

Before a photo leaves your phone, it’s shrunk and all location and camera details are removed. Photos are kept private, and only people on your ranch can see them. Removing a photo deletes it for everyone. See the privacy page.

  17. Weather, and calving weather warnings

The Today screen has a weather card: the ranch’s forecast now and for the next 7 days, rain expected this week, and weather service alerts. A Weather screen has the full forecast.

RanchPilot also warns you when a hard freeze, cold rain or heat in the forecast lines up with cows due or able to calve (it handles a bull left in all year). For example: “Hard freeze Oct 8 to 10, low 24°F: 2 due, 9 could calve.” You set the temperatures. National Weather Service data, US only, and it works offline from the last forecast.

  18. Rain records

A Rain screen: tap Record rain each time you read your gauge, even with no signal, with multi-day readings and more than one gauge. See totals for the last 7 days, 30 days, this month and this year, each against the same days last year, plus daily and month-by-month charts.

Where your gauge doesn’t cover a period, numbers come from the nearest official, airport or volunteer station within 25 miles, and the station is named. Free NOAA climate data, US only.

  19. Fence planner

On Pastures, tap Fence planner. Draw a fence on an aerial map by tapping the corners, drag to adjust, and tap the line to add gates. Or start from a pasture’s outline. Pick barbed wire, woven wire, high-tensile electric or temporary polywire.

It works out the fence length (less gates) and a full materials list: line posts, wood posts, brace assemblies, rolls of wire, clips and staples or insulators, and gates. It shows its working, and gives an optional cost estimate from your own prices. Aerial pictures cover the US.

  20. Delete your account from the app

Go to Settings, then Account, then Delete my account. Before anything is deleted, the app lists what will happen. A ranch you own alone is deleted with all its records, and it tells you how many other people would lose access. See the delete-account page.

  21. What your cattle might bring this week

Market values puts a ballpark range on every head, by class and weight, from USDA Market News reports at sale barns near you, refreshed every morning. Pick your ZIP code and how far out to look. Missing weights are estimated from your own records and marked, it learns from your own sale tickets, and it always shows which barns and sale dates it used.

Other places to sell lists what’s near you besides the weekly barn: pooled and special sales, video and board sales, order buyers, freezer-beef plants and packers. It starts with sale barns in Alabama, south Georgia and north Florida; more regions are coming. A ballpark, never an appraisal.

  22. Catch up on calving notes fast

Quick birth entry: one row per calf, with the mother typed the way you say her tag (“yellow 14”). Twins are recognized, the sire fills in from her breeding record, your own serial numbers are handed out in order, and it all saves at once, even with no signal.

Adding an animal or recording a birth now takes the tag color and your own serial number too.

  23. Invite your crew

Owners and managers can invite hands, managers and view-only people from Settings, with a one-time link sent by text or email. They make an account, or sign in, and land on your ranch with the right role.

Hands never see money anywhere: no Money menu, no amounts, costs or inventory value, and their phones never even receive dollar figures. A view-only person, like your accountant or banker, sees everything without changing anything.

  24. A how-to guide that works with no signal, and Ask

Help in the menu now has the full RanchPilot guide, with search, and it works offline at the chute. And Ask, a help assistant on the same page, answers your how-to questions from the guide. It can’t see or change your herd, your money or any other ranch records, and your questions are handled as described on the privacy page.

  25. Small things that add up

Pause a reminder you already know about, like boosters while you’ve stopped a vaccine, until the vaccine is given again or until a date. Paused reminders stay listed so nothing gets forgotten.

Livestock losses on their own line: the value of animals that died shows separately and stays out of your cash profit and loss. Make your own expense and income categories right from the money forms. And Sign out is always in reach.

  26. ranchpilot.app is live

RanchPilot now has its own website at ranchpilot.app. The app itself is still in development, and early access is by email to hello@greenbowlabs.com.

  27. The first working version is built

RanchPilot now runs end to end in development, with a demo ranch of cattle, sheep, goats, a laying flock and a rabbit litter. Nobody outside Greenbow Labs is using it yet.

    • Offline core. Each phone keeps its own copy of the ranch and syncs in the background. In testing, with the server shut down, the app still opened, showed the herd and recorded a weight, then synced by itself when the server came back.
    • Every species. Eighteen species plus a custom one, each with its own gestation, weaning and stage names, and flocks, lots and litters kept as groups.
    • The daily screens. Today’s alerts, the herd, chute-side work, breeding and calving, pastures and grazing, inventory, money, tasks, and a full export of your records.
  28. RanchPilot gets its name

After a long list of candidates, the ranch app has a name: RanchPilot, because it’s meant to run the whole ranch, not just keep cattle records. Its home on the web will be ranchpilot.app, which is registered and waiting.
